Pride in Modesty is a complex analysis of Italian architecture. Our copy editors worked through two drafts of the manuscript before it went to press. The author has written a challenging and fascinating one-hundred year journey across the diverse landscape of Italian architecture from national unification in 1871 to the work of Aldo Rossi in the 1970s. He discusses the well-known movements of Futurism, Rationalism and Neo-Rationalism and argues that the vernacular tradition was much more pervasive in shaping modern architectural discourse than was the canonic modernist narrative. We copy edited his substantial endnotes and his 40-page bibliography of primary and secondary sources, and checked captions for the accompanying black and white images.
Project: Mafia Movies: A Reader

Mafia Movies: A Reader is a dynamic, enthralling collection of analytical essays pulled together by Dana Renga, assistant professor in the Department of French and Italian at The Ohio State University. Each of the forty essays were carefully read by our TEC editors for clarity and flow, and edited for grammar and consistency in spelling and usage. The multiple references to the large selection of American and Italian films in the collection were carefully compared to the book’s filmography; we edited the captions for the stills from a selection of films; and polished the selected bibliography. The editing required extra discipline to stay focused only because the reading was so mesmerizing and because we all shared some sort of fascination with the mafia movie genre.
Project: Lelia’s Kiss

Lelia’s Kiss: Imagining Gender, Sex, and Marriage in Italian Renaissance Comedy, by Laura Giannetti, brings to life the dynamics, complexities, and humour in the portrayal of gender, sex, and marriage in the comedies of the Italian Renaissance. The TEC editors handling this manuscript paid stringent attention to the detailed notes and bibliography, the treatment of Italian passages and translations, the flow of the narrative, and the clarity of the author’s argument. Professor Giannetti is an associate professor of Italian at the University of Miami.
Project: The Shape of the Suburbs
Author: John Sewell

The Shape of the Suburbs: Understanding Toronto’s Sprawl, by former city councillor and mayor John Sewell, focuses on the city’s urban sprawl from the 1950s right up 2006. Sewell traces the political, socioeconomic, and cultural influences that have shaped the city’s expansion and the rapid development of its suburbs. This project required careful editing of the narrative, and strong attention to descriptions of historical phenomena over a 50-year period. In addition, captions and sources for a multitude of photographs, maps, tables, newspaper articles and political cartoons, notes, and bibliographical resources needed careful editing and checking.

Project: Life Stages and Native Women: Memory, Teachings, and Story Medicine
Author: Kim Anderson
Services Provided: Substantive Editing, Copy Editing
TEC Senior Editor Beth McAuley had worked with author Kim Anderson on two previous books, both published by Sumach Press. Now, for the University of Manitoba Press, Beth has helped transform Kim's doctoral thesis into a rich and accessible resource that presents the teachings of fourteen Aboriginal women elders. Their stories from the past focus on the decolonization and recovery of aboriginal communities, illustrating how different life stages were experienced by Métis, Cree, and Anishnaabe girls and women during the mid-twentieth century. As both Substantive and Copy Editor, Beth interacted closely with the author, raising queries and integrating responses, finalizing structure and content, and ensuring consistency and accuracy in the copy in accordance with the publisher's style guide.

Project: Proceedings of the 14th International Congress on Circumpolar Health, July 11-16, 2009
Services Provided: Linguistic Editing
The International Union for Circumpolar Health and the Canadian Society for Circumpolar Health host an international congress every three years. The conference brings together over 700 scientists, researchers, educators, policymakers, journal editors, and publishers from the circumpolar regions of Canada, the U.S., Russia, Scandinavia, Greenland, and Iceland. During the congress, papers are presented on a broad range of topics, such as the circumpolar health movement, public health, infectious diseases, food security, and the environment. A rich selection of these papers is included in the Proceedings of the 14th ICCH, published as the International Journal of Circumpolar Health Supplements (2010). The 579-page volume includes introductions to the 13 sections, abstracts and papers, maps, illustrations, and posters. Our academic editors worked through each of the introductions and each of the papers included in the volume, editing for consistency in usage and spelling, correcting grammar and syntax, and revising the writing for clarity where necessary. It was a challenging task and one we completed within a few weeks. Upon completion, Tiina Ikäheimo, Editor-in-Chief of the IJCH, praised the quality of our editing: "I am very impressed with your work and how much the language in each of the papers has improved. I know it must have been hard with so many different writers. Thank you!"
Project: International Journal of Circumpolar Health
Services Provided: Linguistic Editing
Based in Oulu, Finland, the IJCH is the official journal of the International Association of Circumpolar Health. The IJCH specializes in Arctic and Antarctic health issues and provides a forum for many disciplines. These include biomedical sciences, social sciences, and humanities as they relate to human health, particularly of indigenous peoples, in high-latitude environments. The IJCH publishes five volumes per year in both print and electronic formats (http://ijch.fi/). The Editing Company has been working as linguistic editor of the Journal over the past three years. We review each submission for English grammar, spelling, and usage and make sure the Journal’s style is consistently applied to the text, tables, and figures.
Beth McAuley, TEC’s senior editor, worked with Dr. T. Kue Young, an Associate Editor of the Journal, as the editor of Health Transitions in Arctic Populations, published by the University of Toronto Press in 2008.
