Projects: Educational Readers & Handbooks
Authors: Various
Services Provided: Literary Permissions & Photo Research

Over the past several months, TEC’s permissions editors have completed 5 book projects for Pearson Canada.

·          The Little Penguin Handbook, Second Canadian Edition, eds. Faigley et al.
·          Essay Writing for Canadian Students with Readings, Seventh Edition, eds. Davis et al.
·          Strategies for Successful Writing: A Rhetoric, Research Guide, Reader, and Handbook, eds. Reinking et al.
·          Along These Lines: Writing Paragraphs and Essays, Fourth Canadian Edition, eds. Biays et al.
·          Canada: A History, Third Edition, eds. Conrad et al.

For each of these books, our permissions team worked to identify, find, and clear literary pieces (essays, articles, poetry) and photo selections. We contacted independent writers, literary agencies, publishing houses, educational databases, government sites, and stock agencies. Once all permissions were in and completed, TEC compiled the literary and image credits page for the back of each textbook.

Project: The DK Handbook, First Canadian Edition

Author: Wysocki, Lynch, & Doyle
Services Provided: Literary Permissions & Photo Research

During an intensive 8-month process, TEC’s permissions editors worked in collaboration with Pearson’s developmental editors, project managers, and the authors of the textbook to identify, find, and clear literary pieces and photo selections for this students’ resource guide to reading, composing, and revising academic writing. We cleared over 40 literary selections and website screen captures from independent writers, literary agencies, publishing houses, educational databases, and government sites. We also tackled a hefty photo list of over 150 separate images. This process involved TEC’s editors making a selection of 2 to 4 images (including details of cost and terms of use) for each photo item and sending the selections to Pearson’s editors for approval. We worked tirelessly to select, confirm, and license these images from stock agencies, news sites, and independent copyright holders. Once all permissions were in and completed, TEC compiled the literary and image credits page that appears at the back of the textbook.

Project: Canadian Literature in English: Texts and Contexts, Volume II
Author: Laura Moss and Cynthia Sugars
Services Provided: Permissions, Literary

Over two years, TEC’s permissions editors worked closely with Pearson’s editors shaping and reshaping the collection to meet the goal of providing a chronological survey of English-Canadian poetry, short fiction, non-fiction, and essays, from the sixteenth century to the present. We cleared over 310 literary pieces for inclusion. The collection had to be balanced not only for literary content but also for budget. TEC was responsible for negotiating fees with copyright holders, reviewing contracts to ensure the requested rights were granted, and notifying copyright holders of cancellations. In addition, TEC compiled the copyright source lines for each item cleared and kept the publisher informed of delays, denials, and clearances.

Project: The World of Psychology
Author: Wood, Wood, Wood, & Desmarais
Services Provided: Photo Research, Textbook

The Editing Company launched its photo research service with this project. Now in its sixth edition, The World of Psychology is a university-level textbook for first year psychology students. Each of the 14 chapters includes text, graphs, tables, and photographs. The Editing Company was responsible for renewing rights for 60 photographs that had been reprinted in the previous edition and researching 15 new photographs. We posted candidate images on Pearson’s ftp site for in-house editors to review, and cleared rights for their selections. We contacted and established networks with a range of photo agencies and stock houses, and provided weekly updates to the publisher on clearances and fees.

Client: Kolel: The Adult Centre for Liberal Jewish Learning

Project:
Open Book: Kolel Online Jewish Studies
Author: Kolel
Services Provided: Editing, Proofreading Website

Since its inception in 1991, Kolel has been enabling men and women to engage in Jewish learning that values both traditional and liberal interpretations. Its most recent project, Open Book, is an online digital learning resource that offers a comprehensive virtual library of liberal Jewish adult educational materials for self-guided and institution-based learning. The Editing Company worked through each of the four sections of Open Book and edited the materials for grammar, spelling, consistency in punctuation, and usage. This work was done within a tight timeline just prior to the project being launched in the spring of 2009. We created a comprehensive style guide listing spellings, treatment of numbers, and punctuation, as well as a list of references used in each of the lessons, making sure they were correctly and consistently cited.

Quip of the Week
“As a college lecturer in Pakistan, I had never been reduced to making cold calls. As a newcomer to Canada, however, things were entirely different, and I had to turn to this very undesirable method of finding my way around the professional world. And with relief and some happiness I confess that cold calls are not all that bad.”
